New SHRM research finds that 44 percent of surveyed U.S. employees feel burned out at work, with just over half (51 percent) saying they feel "used up" at the end of the day.
Workers aren't the only ones who are suffering the impact of burnout; employers bear the brunt of turnover and lower productivity when employees are drained by their work:
- Employees who say they are burned out are nearly three times more likely to be actively searching for another job, compared to workers who do not report burnout.
- Workers who feel burned out from their work are significantly less likely to go above and beyond what is expected of them at work (40 percent versus 56 percent).
Employers' recognition of workers' efforts can stem the effects of burnout, experts say. Take time to notice and reward employees' hard work and accomplishments.
Throughout Mental Health Awareness Month in May, we'll share additional findings from SHRM's Employee Mental Health in 2024 Research Series, plus practical tips to help workplace leaders build cultures that support employees' strong mental health.
