States reported that 212,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending April 13, unchanged from the previous week's revised level. The unemployment rate has remained under 4 percent over the past two years, the longest such streak since the 1960s.

About 1.8 million workers continue to claim unemployment benefits.

Takeaway for employers: At the SHRM Talent 2024 conference this week in Las Vegas, recruiting experts and HR professionals gathered to share best practices on hiring workers in an evolving labor market with millions of open jobs and many identifiable skills gaps.
