Job openings fell by 617,000 in October to 8.7 million, their lowest point since early 2021,
according to the monthly JOLTS report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Openings decreased most in education and health services (-238,000), followed by finance (-217,000) and leisure and hospitality (-136,000).
The number of people quitting—a measure of worker confidence in the ability to leave one job for another—dropped slightly to 3.62 million, showing that workers are not very confident in their ability to find new jobs. Layoffs in October remained steady at 1.6 million, which is consistent with the low levels of weekly unemployment claims data.
On Friday, the Department of Labor will report on how many jobs the U.S. economy added in November, the unemployment rate and wage gains for the month.
