Most CEOs expect a
mild recession this year

Recession fears have persisted since the start of the pandemic. While two-thirds of 210 CEOs recently surveyed predict a recession in 2024, the vast majority (59 percent) expect it to be mild. One year ago, at the start of 2023, a full 95 percent of CEOs wrongly forecast a recession in the coming year.

Inflation predicted to
keep trending down

After reaching its highest level in decades—above 8 percent in 2022—the rate of inflation plummeted to 3.1 percent by the end of 2023. Now, nearly two-thirds of CEOs (64 percent) predict inflation will continue to subside in 2024, most likely gradually. Only 7 percent think that inflation will get worse this year.

Who do CEOs expect to
win the White House?

When asked who they think will win the presidential election (not who they want to win), 38 percent of CEOs predict a victory for former President Trump, followed by 28 percent who expect a Biden reelection and 21 percent who foresee a Nikki Haley victory. In the December 2022 survey, 81 percent of CEOs predicted Ron DeSantis would be the next president.
