Gen Z members as jigsaw pieces that don't fit the puzzle

Generation Z is poised to surpass the number of Baby Boomers in the U.S. workforce this year, and many employers are finding themselves ill-prepared.

Widely credited with being more tech-capable, media-savvy, eco-friendly and inclusive than older generations, "Zoomers" are bringing some welcome changes to their workplaces. But this generation is also regularly accused of communicating unprofessionally, being too casual in their dress and behavior, and having trouble separating their professional and personal lives. In one survey, three-quarters of managers said their "Zoomer" employees were more difficult to work with than older generations.

Some employers have found Gen Z so devoid of soft skills that major consulting firms including PwC, Deloitte and KPMG are offering their young workers specialized training to help them develop work-appropriate communication skills.

But managers are uniquely positioned to coach this younger generation of workers on what's expected of them by modeling how to adapt to a fluid workplace and adjusting their communication style to connect with colleagues of all ages.

A new managers is congratulated as his colleagues gossip in the background

Management is a learned skill, and new managers need instruction to succeed in their new roles—particularly when they're promoted to supervise their former peers. But in an in-depth survey of first-time managers by research scientist William Gentry, nearly 60 percent of respondents cited "adjustment to people management/displaying authority" as their biggest challenge.

"Many first-time managers struggle with the ability to exude a sense of authority over subordinates—some of whom were co-workers and friends before—and gain their respect," write Gentry and colleagues. New managers may find that the transition from being an individual contributor to managing and leading a team of people requires a different mindset and, in many cases, an entirely new skill set.

If you're a new manager and feeling overwhelmed, here's some good news: There are immediate steps you can take to acclimate yourself to your leadership role. While none of these are quick fixes—they will take time and effort to achieve—by taking small steps, you can succeed.

Being in charge is a stressful job, as even the most experienced managers will tell you. When managers are new to their positions, there's often a steep learning curve, compounding that stress. An effective transition to a new role that includes training and mentoring is crucial to the success of rookie managers. Without it, they can falter, bringing their teams down with them.
