Immigration: New Changes
to H-1B Process, Visa Fees

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) this month published two important final rules that impact employers:
1) A beneficiary-centric selection process for H-1B visa registrations. SHRM supports this new process because it promotes fairness and aligns with SHRM's workplace policy recommendations.
2) Higher fees associated with many employment-based petitions and applications, which will increase costs for employers and applicants. During the comment period, SHRM advocated for USCIS to explore more efficient ways to improve services instead of raising fees so dramatically.

HR's Role in Creating the Employee Experience

Creating a positive
experience is critical—
and it's everyone's job

When given a list of 12 responsibilities of HR departments (from hiring to discipline), 46 percent of HR professionals and 36 percent of workers ranked "creating a positive employee experience" either first or second in terms of importance. In a related question, the largest segment of both HR and workers (40 percent) concurred that everyone in the organization shares a responsibility to create that positive experience.

HR and employees
differ on  employee
experience

HR professionals and U.S. workers agreed on the four most important features that make up the employee experience (from a list of 20). But the order of those top four differed among both groups. While HR professionals believed that "feeling you are part of a team" is the No. 1 driver of a positive employee experience, workers only ranked that as the fourth highest. Workers ranked "treated fairly" as No. 1.

A positive experience
and culture will
increase
job satisfaction

Employees who say they are engaged in their work and feel good about their workplace culture are far more likely than those who are not to report high job satisfaction. Engaged workers are 5.6 times more likely to have high job satisfaction, while employees who work in a positive culture are 5.7 times more likely to have high job satisfaction.
