... But need to improve
their strategic and
financial capabilities

When CHROs were asked where their HR departments weren't doing well, the top problem area was developing strategic workforce plans, with 48 percent saying their department either "needs improvement" or "needs vast improvement." Other HR capabilities that need help: influencing strategy (27 percent), understanding HR's financial impact (24 percent), understanding external trends (18 percent) and planning for change (17 percent).

The source of CHROs:
A majority still come
from external hires

Sixty percent of CHROs achieved their position via an external hire, compared with 34 percent who were hired internally from within the HR function and 6 percent who were hired internally from another department. One main reason that so many CHROs are hired from the outside: Companies seek to avoid risk by hiring CHROs who have experience in the C-suite and who have worked with boards of directors.
