President Biden's New Budget Proposes National Paid Leave Program
President Joe Biden revealed his plan to establish a national paid family and medical leave program—which would provide eligible employees up to 12 weeks of time off—in his 2025 budget proposal released this week.
 
 
SHRM has called for expanded access to paid leave for more workers, proposing a voluntary insurance-based solution for employers to offset the costs associated with self-funding.
 
 
 
Workforce Development Overhaul Will Need Cooperation from All Stakeholders
Industry and higher education will need to work together more closely to ensure new workers have the skills needed to thrive. Those workers also need to develop a skills-first, continuous learning mindset, say lawmakers, CEOs and college leaders.

Employee's Claims of Sexual Harassment and Assault Not Subject to Mandatory Arbitration
An employee who signed an arbitration agreement with his employer in the regular course of his employment, without disclosing that he was allegedly being subjected to sexual harassment and assault, did not have to arbitrate legal claims arising out of the alleged harassment and assault, a California appeals court ruled.
 
 
 
Fired Employee Ineligible for Unemployment Benefits
The Supreme Court of Idaho held that an employee was discharged for refusing to meet with a supervisor, a performance expectation that had been communicated to her, and therefore, she was not entitled to unemployment benefits because her refusal amounted to misconduct.
 
 
 
Reporting Child Abuse Case Did Not Lead to Employee Termination
The Texas Supreme Court ruled a nurse could not prove retaliation when her employer fired her after she reported potential child abuse to Child Protective Services. The employer had sufficient defense against the retaliation claims due to the nurse's previous incidents of misconduct.
