If your employees seem disengaged and isolated from their work and your company, you're not alone. Research by Gallup, which defines employee engagement as "the involvement and enthusiasm of employees in their work and workplace," found that only one-third of employees reported being engaged at work in 2023.

That disengagement has real costs. New research from McKinsey & Company finds that employees who are disengaged—which can result in frequent absenteeism, stress, poor performance, self-isolation and increased conflict—cost a midsize S&P 500 company between $228 million and $355 million per year in lost productivity, or at least $1.1 billion per company over five years. It follows that improving employee engagement can offer significant benefits for your team and your larger organization.

HR leaders repeatedly point to the lack of soft skills among employees as a prime reason for office discontent. In one recent survey of HR professionals and hiring managers, respondents indicated that the soft skills most in need of fine-tuning include problem solving, time management and adaptability to change. Half of the survey's respondents said they think jobs require more soft skills now than before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Managers can play an important role in cultivating soft skills among their team members, say experts. Mentoring, coaching and role-playing are all proven tactics for helping employees engage more effectively with their colleagues while enhancing their productivity.

New research by SHRM reveals that instances of incivility have become a regular occurrence in the workplace. The survey of over 1,000 U.S. employees found that 66 percent of workers say they have experienced or witnessed incivility in their workplace within the past month and 57 percent have experienced or witnessed incivility at work within the past week.
