Diversifying the Talent Pool

More employers—including Bristol Myers Squibb and IBM—are turning to a different approach to find the best talent in a tight job market: skills-based hiring.

This hiring method focuses on individuals' abilities and competencies rather than their education and direct experience. It's a more expansive approach that considers individuals who don't fit the traditional template for a role yet have skills and other experience that can be applied to the job. It often eliminates four-year degree requirements to open up the potential pool of candidates to those who acquired their knowledge through less traditional paths.

Experts say this tactic significantly broadens and diversifies the talent pool. At the same time, however, implementation can be challenging because it demands a drastic change in mindset from those who have been using degrees and experience as proxies for talent for years—if not decades.

Candidates who didn't have a degree often would lose out on opportunities and struggle to advance their careers. Recently, widespread talent shortages and several other cultural shifts have prompted more employers to revisit that requirement. Read More
