A Snapshot of HR Executives in the Fortune 500

chart-1-feb21-enb.jpg

CHRO tenure is near
the average for
other C-suite roles

HR chiefs at Fortune 500 companies, on average, stay onboard for 4.5 years in their positions, just below the 4.6-year average for all Fortune 500 C-suite positions. Tenure for CEOs was the highest at 7 years, and the lowest was chief diversity officers (CDOs) at 2.9 years. CDO was a newly created role in some companies, which pulled down the average. Other average tenures: CFO at 4.5 years and chief legal officer at 6.1 years.

Turnover among CHROs
has fallen from
its pandemic peak

Turnover among CHROs in the Fortune 500 was down to 11 percent last year after hitting a record high 28 percent in 2020. "Stress finds the cracks. I think the stress of COVID cracked a lot of HR people," the lead author of the Spencer Stuart report told Fortune. Plus, many CEOs were quick to change their CHROs during those first harried months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

HR and diversity
positions have the most
women, racial minorities

Chief diversity officers (89 percent) and CHROs (76 percent) are the most likely residents of the C-suite to be either women or racial minorities. On the other side of the spectrum, chief operating officer (19 percent), CEO (21 percent), chief financial officer (27 percent) and chief supply chain officer positions (30 percent) were less likely to be filled by women or racial minorities.
