Here's One Important Skill HR Should Focus On with Generative AI

HR's Role in Planning for Their Own Succession

chart 1 - nov 15.jpg

Nearly two-thirds of
CHROs are preparing
for their replacements

When CHROs were asked if they were involved in preparing for or developing someone within their organization to succeed them, nearly two-thirds said "yes" (37 percent preparing informally and 23 percent formally). Another 25 percent said they haven't started such preparations but planned to. Only 16 percent of CHROs had no formal or informal succession plan for their jobs.

A majority of CHROs
didn't get succession
planning assistance

Regarding their own preparation for their current HR roles, a majority of CHROs (83 percent) said they didn't receive preparation for internal succession, either formally or informally. Why? More than half (57 percent) said it wasn't possible because they were hired from the outside. But 26 percent of CHROs said they had no succession discussions, even though they were promoted into their current roles.

Lack of time,  resources
is the top excuse
for not having a plan

For HR professionals who said their organization doesn't have a succession plan in place for any employees, the most commonly cited reasons for not having a plan are: the organization lacks the time and resources to develop one (31 percent), the organization is too small to need one (18 percent), or the company is family owned and operated (15 percent).
