Remote or in the Office: Who Wants to Work Where?

Men are more likely
to prefer in-office work

A global survey of knowledge workers found that men (15 percent) are more likely than women (9 percent) to say that they prefer to work full time in the office. In addition, men are less likely than women (43 percent to 49 percent) to say that they'd prefer to work entirely remotely.

Older workers favor
remote work the most 

Across all age groups, only about 1 in 10 knowledge workers say they'd prefer to work five days a week in the office. Surprisingly, the oldest cohort (Baby Boomers) are the most likely to say they'd prefer to work fully remotely (52 percent), compared with Generation X and Generation Z (both 47 percent) and Millennials (45 percent).

Finance and health
workers  lean toward
remote work

Knowledge workers in the finance and health industries were most likely to say they prefer to work fully remotely (both 52 percent), which was similar to technology workers (50 percent) and defense staff (49 percent). The energy sector had the lowest percentage of workers preferring to work remotely (37 percent), followed by manufacturing.
